Nottingham City Transport is pleased to confirm its participation in the government’s £3 single bus fare cap, which will run from 1st January 2025 until 31st December 2025.
As part of this new scheme, the cost of an adult single bus journey will remain affordable at £3 on all NCT services, including routes to Loughborough, Southwell and Calverton.
This new cap price reflects the price a City Zone single fare would have been had the £2 fare cap not been in place, aligning with fare changes NCT introduced during 2023 and 2024 to address inflationary pressures.
Save More with Day and Season Tickets
NCT encourages customers who make two or more journeys a day in the Nottingham City Zone to switch back to the NCT All Day Ticket, priced at just £5.30, offering better value than two single fares under the new cap.
Adults in the Nottingham City Area:
Customers can bulk buy 10 single journeys through the NCTX Buses app at £27.00, which is £3.00 cheaper than buying 10 individual single tickets.
Regular travellers can save even more by purchasing Easyrider Everyday or Anyday passes, providing cost-effective travel options for frequent bus users.
In the Outer Zone, customers who make two journeys a day should return to asking for a Return Ticket, which is capped at £6.00 (some Outer Zone only return journeys are lower) and those making three or more journeys should revert back to buying an All Day Network Ticket, priced at £7.80 (Adult) and £5.50 (Under 19).
Under 19, Under 22 and Students in the City Zone
Under 19 single tickets will remain at £1.70 as they are already below the price of the current and new fare caps.
Student and Under 22 singles will be priced at £2.30, which reflects their standard rate without the £2 fare cap. These tickets are available exclusively via the NCTX Buses App only with verification required.
David Astill, NCT’s Managing Director said, “We were delighted when the £2 fare cap scheme was introduced both as a way of tackling the cost of living crisis for our customers, which was prevalent back in January 2023, but also as an initiative to boast bus ridership which had suffered badly as a consequence of the COVID pandemic.”
He continued “Two years on, we accept that the fare cap has to increase to be affordable, but urge our customers to transfer to buying a day ticket if making more than one journey in order to avoid the increase in the single fare. At £5.30 for all day travel for one adult and £8.50 for all day travel for 2 adults and up to 3 children, NCT continues to offer some of the lowest bus fares in the country and with our high frequency services we offer a genuine alternative to using the car.”
Ease of Purchase
The £3 single fare will be available to purchase:
- On board using Contactless Tap&Go
- Cash – exact fare needed
- On the NCTX Buses App
- With Robin Hood Pay As You Go cards
NCT remains committed to making public transport accessible, supporting the government’s cost-of-living measures and sustainability goals. Recent research from Transport Focus (2023) demonstrates the positive impact of fare caps:
- 11% of passengers reported that the fare cap has increased their bus use, up from 7% at the start of the scheme.
- 80% of passengers agreed that the fare cap helped people with the cost of living.
Customers who have purchased existing £2 fare cap single or bulk tickets in the NCTX Buses App will need to use their tickets before they expire on 31st December 2024.
